Definition of Obesity

ObeseObesity can be defined as excess fat that affects the health of the person. This excess fat occurs when the amount of energy that is ingested with food is greater than is spent, and this excess energy is converted into fat.

Obesity is a public health problem because it affects a significant percentage of the population, as well as the number of people become ill and die, ie affects morbidity and mortality.

Being obese and being overweight is not exactly the same. An obese person has a lot of extra body fat, not just a few pounds. Obese people are very overweight and at risk of developing serious health problems.

To determine whether a person is obese, doctors and other professionals in the health area often use a measurement called “body mass index (BMI). First, a doctor will measure and weigh the person. Then the doctor uses these numbers to calculate another number, the BMI.

Obesity can be hereditary, but it is difficult to determine to what extent depends on genes. Many families eat the same foods, have the same habits and tend to think alike on issues related to weight (for example, they insist that children eat a lot to get “big and strong”).

All these situations can contribute to weight gain, therefore it is sometimes difficult to determine whether a person is born with a tendency to obesity and being overweight or if you learn eating and exercise habits that lead to weight gain. In most cases, weight-related problems arise from a combination of genetic factors and habits.
