Selected article

Severus Snape is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series written by J. K. Rowling. In the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, he is one of the primary antagonists. As the series progresses, Snape's motivation grows more layered and complex, and Rowling does not fully reveal the details or his true loyalties until the end of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Snape appears in all seven novels of the series.

Over the course of the series, Snape's portrayal evolves from that of a malicious and partisan teacher who unfairly punishes Harry and his associates while favouring Slytherin students, to that of a pivotal character of considerable complexity and moral ambiguity. Rowling has described him as "a gift of a character".

Quotes

  • Dobby: "Harry...Potter..."

The green eyes found the black, but after a second something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more.

  • Luna Lovegood: "A Wrackspurt - they're invisible, they float in through your ears and make your brain go fuzzy," she said. "I thought I felt one zooming around in here."
  • Harry Potter: "I don't know who Maxime thinks she's kidding. If Hagrid's half-giant, she definitely is. Big bones... the only thing that's got bigger bones than her is a dinosaur."
  • Draco Malfoy: "Longbottom, if brains were gold, you'd be poorer than Weasley, and that's saying something."
  • Severus Snape: "Oh, very good," interrupted Snape, his lip curling. "Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. 'Ghosts are transparent.'"
  • Albus Dumbledore: "Humans have a knack for choosing precisely the things that are worst for them."
  • The Marauder's Map: "Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that (Professor Snape) ever became a professor."
  • Lucius Malfoy: Now let's everybody just... calm down. Shall we?
  • Ginny Weasley: "There's the silver lining I've been looking for," [When Harry admits dating possibilities on the run are pretty slim]
  • Hermione Granger: "I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed. Or worse, EXPELLED!!
  • Sirius Black: "If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals."

Featured Character

Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (born 1881), is a character in the Harry Potter novel series by J.K. Rowling. Dumbledore also appears in all five film adaptations. Dumbledore in the series is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for most of the series, and is a leading character for most of the series in the fight against Voldemort. Dumbledore is described as tall and thin, with long silver hair that looked long enough to tuck into his belt and a long beard.

He is famous as an alchemist who has worked with Nicolas Flamel, the only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone, and is credited with discovering the twelve uses of dragon's blood. He is known to be able to conjure Gubraithian Fire (magical everlasting fire). He holds the Order of Merlin, First Class, for Grand Sorcery. He is also the Chief Warlock on the Wizengamot (wizard court) and Supreme Mugwump for the International Confederation of Wizards.

Featured creature

A Phoenix is a mythical creature possessing a number of magical abilities in the Harry Potter series by J.K.Rowling. A tail feather of a phoenix is sometimes used as the core of a magical wand. Whenever a phoenix dies, whether it be by violence or old age, it bursts into flame and is promptly reborn out of the ashes as a baby phoenix.
Phoenix tears are said to have healing properties and these birds can carry immensely heavy weights. In the series Dumbledore's pet Fawkes is the only phoenix that is mentioned. It is said to be colored red and gold and roughly the size of a swan. Interestingly both Harry Potter's and Lord Voldemort's have Fawkes' tail feather in their wand core.
